SPOOKED: THE GHOSTS OF WAVERLY HILLS SANATORIUM
By Ian Lee Tich

Spooked is a documentary about a tuberculosis hospital in Kentucky known as the Waverly Hills Sanatorium that’s alleged to be haunted. It was originally shot as a “making of” during the production of a film called Death Tunnel (see review on this site) that was filmed at the actual hospital. For some reason I thought this was going to be more of a documentary about the making of Death Tunnel that happened to include scary happenings and EVP (electromagnetic voice phenomenon), but instead it was close to two hours of hospital history.

Don’t get me wrong, the stuff about the hospital was definitely neat to learn about, but I wasn’t expecting to watch Discovery Channel if you know what I mean. And I was definitely expecting more scares and genuine creepiness. I wanted to see more of the Death Tunnel cast and crew getting freaked out by ghosts. I was deeply puzzled (see annoyed) by the constant interviews with random local bands and teenagers who just kept saying things like, “dude, it’s haunted and stuff.” I was bored, and I wanted to be scared, you get the picture. There’s not much more to say beyond that. If you like watching long histories of hospitals then this is for you, otherwise I’d say stick with the Ghost Hunters episode about this place; it has more “evidence” of ghosties and more creepy freak outs.
