Three short films by Christopher Alan Broadstone - MY SKIN, SCREAM FOR ME, and HUMAN NO MORE
By Aine

My Skin, Scream for Me, and Human No More are three shorts films by Christopher Alan Broadstone, now together in one special edition DVD.

The first of the films, My Skin, focuses on a young murder victim and Death (Tony Simmons) coming to claim her soul, but not before having his own fun with her killer. My Skin has the dialogue, lighting and pacing of a gangster/film noir film, complete with period style props and music. Yet instead of moving film we see events unfold in a series of still photographs and slow-moving images. While the voice of Death is shocking/grating at first I quickly tuned in because I found it hard to understand what was being said otherwise. While being a little more artsy than I usually like my horror, My Skin stands out as a definite break from the norm.

Scream for Me deviates slightly in style from the first film with lots of green, darkness, and grit, though it also stars actor Tony Simmons who by now is really starting to creep me out. I must admit that I really didn’t understand a lot of the background plot in this one. Maybe I’m going deaf and missed out on some crucial bit of explanation, but once again I had trouble hearing the dialogue. From what I could figure out, a young guy wants some girl to scream, for some reason relating to his family (?) but ends up killing her. Just then a crazy guy walks in, kicks some ass, goes on a long rant, and then declares that he’s “come for some fuckin’ and he always gets what he’s come for.” What happens next is pretty vile, occasionally amusing, but vile. I’ll leave it up to your imagination and just say that I had I known the content was such I would have assigned the review to one of my other writers who is more able to tolerate the subject matter than I am. Despite this, I find Scream for Me to be the pick of the three.

Which brings me to the final film, Human No More: another artsy/noir-esque film, this has something to do with a detective’s inner struggles after losing everything to a psycho killer who may or may not be the Devil. Seriously, I am becoming hard of hearing or something? This one didn’t really stick with me for some reason, though I liked the music and the imagery. And yet again, it starred Tony Simmons, the director must really love this guy.

Broadstone has a unique style all his own and having seen just these three I’d have to say his work will only progress to bigger and better things. For more information on these films and his other works please visit www.blackcabproductions.com
