Hatred
of a Minute is right; as in I hated every minute I wasted watching this movie.
Admittedly, I had a feeling this flick was going to suck, but with the names
of Bruce Campbell and Gunnar Hansen attached I gave it a shot. That was my first
mistake.
It began innocently enough; flashing scenes of an abusive step-father, played by the deliciously menacing Gunnar Hansen. Unfortunately, there were more scenes that followed.
This film has been a long time in the making for director Mike Kallio, over nine years in fact. Mike was an aspiring film maker from, you guessed it, Michigan. He managed to obtain the help of Bruce Campbell through a series of unrelenting emails and phone calls. The story goes in a similar way to the J.R. Bookwalter/Sam Raimi story, which is not my tale to tell. (And I’m lazy)
Anyway, through many hardships, yadda yadda, Hatred of a Minute got made, backed by the driving force of Bruce “Ash” Campbell. It probably shouldn't have.
The story is basically about a guy (also Mike Kallio) who is all messed up because of his terrible abusive step dad (sexy Gunnar Hansen). Everything is happy with his lady friend until he starts getting headaches while transcribing morgue reports, which is his job conveniently enough. He suddenly snaps, for no obvious reason and starts talking to some imaginary friends….ala the angel and devil on each shoulder routine. Only the “devil” is a mute bald man prone to making faces and looking like Nosferatu, and the “angel” is some annoying little gay guy who speaks in riddles. I guess I’d go nuts too if I had to deal with them all of the time. All of this is very annoying, and confusing, and takes away from the point of the film, which I believe had something to do with the fact that abused people can grow up and become serial killers, well duh! At least I think that’s what the director was going for, it’s pretty unclear.
Other than the Bruce Campbell cameo, Gunnar Hansen, and a cute reference to the Evil Dead, this movie was a total waste of time and money; no wonder it took forever to get released, and it probably never should have been. Hoperfully Mr. Kallio’s next project will be a little more coherent. If there is a next project, better luck next time.
