Hellraiser: Deader
By Aine

Hellraiser: Deader is the seventh installment in the every-growing Hellraiser series. Each one strays further away from the original, and I guess that could be considered a good thing, but sometimes it’s really reaching; like in this movie. I’ve found that with each subsequent film it gets a little more out there, and it’s getting hard to keep them all straight.

In Deader, a sexy and brazen reporter [Kari Wuhrer] goes hunting for the truth behind a club of Euro-trash goth kids who like to die and be brought back to life by a modern day messiah. Only this messiah is supposedly a member of the bloodline of the original toy maker who built “the box.” Unfortunately, this does not save him from being boring.

Basically, we’re subjected to nearly 60 minutes that are all mind games and hallucinations, or are they? While I appreciate horror that makes you think, this just came across as same old same old. It tries way too hard and it doesn’t succeed in the fright it attempts.

Kari Wuhrer is fantastic nonetheless, and for all you boys out there hopin’ to get a peek: if you don’t blink you can catch her nipple in one scene. As for the rest, where is Pinhead? He is in the movie, but it’s like he and the cenobites just stop in to make a cameo appearance these days. I don’t know about you, but the last thing I want to see is Pinhead phonin’ one in. *sigh* Hellraiser part 8 is already completed too.
