DARK X MAS Convention - Warren, Ohio November 11-13, 2005
By Rebecca Shott

A local Cleveland, Ohio area convention that happens twice a year based out of the Comfort Inn at Warren, Dark Christmas was quite an experience. Its sister convention, Dark Karnival, takes place in the spring or early summer. The weekend of November 11-13, 2005, was complied of guests that ranged from classic horror movies to science-fiction/adventure to today’s most popular gore flicks.

It was a weekend of autograph singing, pictures, introductions, dancing, interesting observations, creativity, talent and a lot of fun and friends. The more well-known actors that made an appearance were Sid Haig with his three tables of “Sid merchandise”, Leslie Easterbrook who was an absolute sweetheart and very funny, Aron Eisenber, Conrad Brooks, Tom Savini and Felix Silla. We can’t forget the lovely Tiffany Shepis and always morbidly creative and unique, writer Joe Knetter.

The ballroom and conference room, and the main hallway throughout the bottom floor of the hotel were full of actor and actress’ tables. Artists sold their drawings and paintings. An interesting table of human-sized bat wings, monster masks and Devil tails was displayed well.

Independent readings, Q&A sessions and movie showings took place this weekend, including a premier showing by Ron of Dark Winter Studios. The ten-minute movie can be viewed here: http://darkwinterstudios.net/halloween/halloween.mov. Please show your support and let Dark Winter know your thoughts!

Bill Moseley was intended to be a Dark Xmas guest but he has been in Poland filming his new psychological thriller. I was a bit disappointed not to see him again, but I wish him the best and I look forward to his new movie. A couple of other guests, including Jasmin St. Claire, also cancelled due to unknown circumstances.

A touch of paranormal made the weekend a bit more intriguing. Story has it that the Comfort Inn, over a hundred years old, has quite a few ghosts roaming the hallways and rooms. The infamous haunting takes place in room 303, which of course, I requested. We conducted some ghost hunting and found that not only was our room active, but the hallway throughout the third floor and a portion of the second floor was haunted as well.

Sometime in the 1930’s or 1940’s a fire burned through most of the third floor. People were trapped and passed away in rooms, the hallway and in a rush to get out of the hotel, many plunged to their deaths in the elevator shaft. Both nights my roommate and I heard noises such as large items being moved around in our room, and something like a shampoo bottle falling in the bathtub. When we looked in the morning, nothing was out of place and no bottles were found in the tub. We sensed a woman, a couple of men and another person heard the voice of a child. Later in the weekend, a small handprint appeared on our bathroom door about three feet off the floor. The hallway outside of the bathroom is where we believe the “woman in blue” who haunts room 303 died. In general, many ghostly shadows were seen in mirrors and out of the corner of our eyes, and a few genuine orbs showed up in pictures. It was a successful investigation!

R.I.P.
Matt McGrory, a uniquely talented actor and loveable person passed away in August. Everyone who met and knew Matt stated how wonderful he was, and how big of a heart he had. His gentle, humorous demeanor played an important role in many of our lives as a character or friend.

James Doohan, known for playing “Scotty” in the original Star Trek series left us in July of 2005. It was reported that Jimmy was one of the nicest celebrities that people have met. Staring in seven of the ten Star Trek films, he is also known as a hero in “real life” as he served in the Military, World War II.

Michael Sheard passed away at the end of August, 2005 and was best known for his roles as Admiral Ozzel in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Adolf Hitler in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and has been featured in many recent television series. Michael never missed a chance to attend a convention or event, and he will always be remembered for touching a part of everyone’s hearts.

Thanks to Jeremy Caughey for promoting a great show.
